ON JACOB LAWRENCE’S ‘LADDERS’

He showed us slides and lectured

on those Harlem scenes he’d pictured,—

with passion,—as our limner

of ladders and their dreamer.

He wondered aloud to us

as to why they figure thus

so frequently in his art.

I said, “A song may play a part—

‘We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder.’”

It made him all the gladder

that I’d shared our people’s flair

with him, with those assembled there.

In Love there is no loss.

We are climbing Jacob’s ladder,

as soldiers of the cross.
